Deambulando

Since I was a kid I've always been amazed by cameras, cinematography and cartoons. Initially, I didn't know what I wanted to do for a living but then I stumbled upon a graphic design program and fell in love with this career. My inspiration always comes from art in general, be it cinema, paintings, digital art, graphic design or life itself, because nature is so wonderful to watch and admire.

Afternoon Memories

I really love movies and watching the style, narratives and techniques of Stanley Kubrick, Francis Ford Coppola, Orson Welles, Hayao Miyasaki, Hideaki Anno and many more. I also love a lot of anime and Pixar movies. Classical art, particularly baroque paintings, has incredible lighting that is so strong and beautiful.

Noche Mágica

My illustrations are inspired by a magical and mystical world. I love creatures like goblins or fantastical animals. Although they can be seen as dark characters, I like to represent them in a cheerful way and see the beauty that surrounds them.

Hechicero

I think that making illustrations helps me escape from routine, the city and monotony. The styles that I like and that I try to express are simple and colorful because they move away from the reality that surrounds me in the city.

Halloween Costume: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

I’ve been creating Halloween costumes for myself for the last 6 years or so. It all started as a competition between my friend and I to see who could make the best costume and just continued from there. I love seeing people’s reactions when they first see me—sometimes it’s the closest they’ll ever get to seeing their favorite stars or musicians. All of my characters are people who I’ve looked up to or have followed throughout their careers.

I begin by collecting reference material of their face, body, and their most recognizable outfits. I’m all about details—that little extra effort is what can make these characters come alive. It might be something as small as adding a piece of tape to Kobe’s injured index finger or Jay Z’s Roc-a-fella chain that might make the difference.
Then I sketch out a couple of drawings, focusing on proportions, and sculpt my character in clay or digitally. Once I finish the modeling, I create the actual three dimensional mask, adjust it for the fit on my head, and usually use a combination of airbrush and brushing techniques to paint the skin and other features.

Halloween Costume: Vicente "Chente" Fernandez

My favorite art memory is also one of my earliest. I remember my kindergarten teacher asking us to draw whatever came to our minds. I drew a fire engine and she loved it so much that she asked me to draw another one. Knowing I was pretty good at drawing gave me a chance to express myself and excel in an area that allowed me to be creative.

I Pledge Series & Mural

Born in New Zealand but raised in Jamaica, I have been drawing from as long as I can remember. My aim as an artist is to use concepts and media that are able to inspire and enlighten people about how art can really come from anywhere or anything; and to leave a positive contribution and impact on those who engage with the art I create.

Inktober

I founded the company, ‘The Jamecca Motif’, in 2016 fueled by my conviction that Jamaica has incredible, untapped potential to set a global standard in any industry. The aim is to create products and services that serve to beautify, uplift and inspire while also highlighting our Jamaican culture and craftsmanship.

Right now my biggest passion is typography which is not very popular in Jamaica at the moment so I reference quite a few international lettering artists. But the artists that I look up to the most are actually some of my closest friends from art school, two who instantly come to mind are Mark Samuels and Taj Francis. Outside of their undisputed talent, they are incredibly driven and have really made an incredible contribution to the creative industry in Jamaica.
